Manufacturers of LED Lighting

The term LED refers to a light source that generates photons from the movement of electrons that recombine with electron holes when an electrical current is passed through a semiconductor material containing a specific type of p-n junction.

In this article, we summarized and characterized the LED lighting technology suppliers into three distinct groups of companies. The first group consists of LED chip manufacturers, as well as semiconductor devices. The second group includes packaging manufacturers, which are defined as the housings or other assemblies that hold the semiconductor LEDs, provide associated electrical input wiring or harnesses, and include any necessary mounting connections. Finally, the article includes summaries of LED Lighting manufacturers who sell finished lighting units to businesses or consumers either wholesale or retail.

LED Chip Manufacturers in the United States and Around the World

These multinational corporations produce LED chips that enable control of LED lighting. Current flows through the chip, causing it to emit light. Because the chips can be bonded directly to the substrate within the LED bulb, the bulb is known as a chip-on-board (COB) LED. LED chips allow for the control of luminosity, brightness, color, and lifetime in applications such as roadways, parking lots, and indoors.

Manufacturers of LED Packages

These businesses create LED packages. LED packages are assemblies that contain an LED chip. The LED packages shield the LED chip and the welded lead wires from direct environmental contact. With LED phosphors and epoxy silicone resin, they secure and encapsulate the chip, allowing for versatility and standardization in LED lighting applications. Packages include F5 lamps for indoor applications, surface mount devices (SMDs) for displays, high power LEDs for spot lighting, and COB LEDs for outdoor lighting.

Table 1 compares general LED suppliers in North America. Tables 2 and 3 rank businesses in two more specific categories. Some companies produce both chips and packages and are listed in Tables 2 and 3.
